Things to Do Over 4th of July Weekend in Cortez

Montezuma County may be small and “off the beaten path”, but we have lots of things to do in Cortez over 4th of July weekend!

Watch the Fireworks at Parque De Vida

The Cortez Fireworks display happens every year in Parque De Vida (right outside the Cortez Recreation Center & very near the Welcome Center). Bring a picnic blanket and refreshments, the show starts at 9 PM.

Experience Colorado on a Farm Tour

Nothing says “Colorado!” like experiencing an ag-tour!

Learn about Colorado’s farming heritage on this 5-hour tour of a local (4th generation!!!), working family-run farm. It’s pretty neat (and you get lunch).

Mesa Verde Farm & Ranch Tours run weekly on Fridays or Saturdays. Over the 4th of July weekend there will be a tour on Friday AND Saturday starting at 9 AM.

Watch Native American Dances @ the Cultural Center

The Cortez Cultural Center & Ute Mountain Casino & Hotel have partnered this year to host the annual summer dances. Running every night from 7-8 PM there are FREE cultural dances to watch in the Cultural Center amphitheater.

The perfect way to finish an evening in Cortez?

Grab dinner at a local restaurant in town, head to Moose & More for an ice cream cone, walk over to the dances (enjoy culture while eating your dessert), wander to a high point (there is a staircase behind the Cultural Center that will do) to watch the sunset over the Ute, then finish with a beer at WildEdge.

Dances take place every night (except Sunday) at 7 PM (even on the 4th of July!) & are FREE to the public.

Listen to Live Music

Southwest Colorado is known for its vibrant, local music scene. Most of our breweries have live music on weekend nights. This year there is live music at Mancos Brewing Company on July 4th and 6th, music at Fenceline Ciders on Friday & Saturday and the Dolores River Brewery on July 5th.

Hang Out at First Fridays @ Buffalo Bob’s Trading Co.

Small town America loves its community gatherings, and Cortez is no exception! Buffalo Bob’s, located right next to the Welcome Center, is now hosting “First Fridays” - a gathering place for shopping, eating, dancing, & drinking! (Kids are welcome too!) It’s from 5-9 PM on July 5th and entry is FREE.
